Onimusha: Way of the Sword Collectibles — Soul Orbs, Secrets and Upgrades

Updated 2026-06-03

Onimusha: Way of the Sword has several collectible types scattered across Kyoto. Finding everything rewards you with lore, stat upgrades, and achievement progress. The collectibles are divided into memory fragments (story lore), soul caches (permanent stat boosts), hidden weapons (one optional weapon), and upgrade materials (for max-level weapon upgrades). None are required to beat the game, but collection-minded players will want them all.

Memory fragment locations

Memory fragments are glowing white orbs hidden in each district. They are usually behind locked gates or on side paths that require environmental puzzle solving. Collecting all 12 unlocks a bonus cutscene after the final boss that adds context to the Samurai's backstory. The fragments are ordered—you find them in a set sequence regardless of exploration order. Key characters are revealed through these memories.

  • Market Row: 2 fragments (one in tutorial, one behind a breakable wall).
  • Temple Gate: 2 fragments (requires climbable wall shortcut).
  • Noble District: 3 fragments (one requires Frost magic).
  • Imperial Grounds: 2 fragments (one after Lord Hideki first fight).
  • Flooded Canal: 2 fragments (both require Frost and Flame magic).
  • Burned Castle: 1 fragment (in a side room before the Genma Sovereign).

Soul cache tips

Soul caches are large glowing yellow containers that permanently boost your Oni Gauntlet's absorb range by 5% each. They are visible from a distance but often require solving a nearby puzzle to reach. The Oni Gauntlet pulses faster when you are near a cache. Collecting all 8 grants a 40% total absorb range increase, which is significant for safe soul collection during boss fights. See the Oni Gauntlet entity page for more on upgrade mechanics.

The soul cache in the Flooded Canal is the easiest to miss. Look for a submerged platform visible only when you freeze the water surface with Frost magic. Stand on the ice platform and the cache is on a ledge above you.

FAQ

Are collectibles missable?
Memory fragments tied to specific story gates are missable if you pass the point of no return. The game warns you before the final area. Everything else can be collected via free roam after the story.
Do collectibles carry over to New Game Plus?
Soul caches and upgrade materials carry over. Memory fragments reset since they are tied to story progression, but the bonus cutscene unlocks permanently once collected in any save.
