Onimusha: Way of the Sword Difficulty — All Levels Explained

Updated 2026-06-03

Onimusha: Way of the Sword offers four difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Hard+. The differences go beyond simple damage scaling—enemy placements change, new enemy types appear, Issen windows shrink, and boss attack patterns gain additional moves. Choosing the right difficulty for your skill level and goals makes the difference between a satisfying challenge and a frustrating wall. New players should read the beginner guide first.

Which difficulty should you pick?

Normal is the intended first-playthrough experience. It offers fair challenge without demanding perfection. Easy is available for players who want to experience the story and exploration with minimal combat friction. Hard is for players comfortable with action games who want the Issen system to be a requirement, not an option. Hard+ unlocks after beating Hard and rearranges enemy placements significantly—it is effectively a new game plus mode with a difficulty twist. See the achievements guide for difficulty-based unlock requirements.

  • Easy: for story-focused players or those new to action games.
  • Normal: the default. Best balance of challenge and fun.
  • Hard: for action game veterans. Expect to die regularly.
  • Hard+: for challenge runners and completionists. Exclusive enemy variants.
You cannot switch difficulty mid-playthrough. The choice at the start is locked until you beat the game or start a new save. Hard+ is not selectable until you clear Hard at least once.

Rewards per difficulty

Higher difficulties grant bonus soul multipliers (Hard: 1.5x souls, Hard+: 2x souls) and unique weapon skins for completion. Completing the game on Hard+ unlocks a cosmetic skin for the Oni Gauntlet that is not available through any other means. Difficulty achievements stack: beating Hard+ unlocks all lower difficulty achievements.

FAQ

Does Normal become too easy with upgrades?
By the midgame, upgraded weapons make Normal encounters manageable. The difficulty curve is balanced so you feel powerful but never invincible.
What changes on Hard+ beyond stats?
New enemy variants appear in areas where they did not exist before. Some shortcuts are locked behind boss kills instead of key items. Bosses gain one new attack per phase.
